Why Ex personnel competency for mechanical and/or process engineers?

Few days back I received a question from a mechanical engineer:

Why there is that much hectic around non-electrical explosion protection? So far we solved everything via hazardous area classification and the same person helped us to select the acceptable installations. Is it still ok?
